Bartender & Venue Manager
Reports To: TOJ Front of House Manager
Pay Grade: $22/hr plus tips starting rate for Bartenders, $23/hr for Venue Managers
Work Schedule: Part-time, flexible, primarily evening hours with some matinee shifts. Estimated 4-12 hours per week, depending on programming.
Located in Seattle’s International District, Theatre Off Jackson is a hub for diverse and affordable artistic performances. With a 140-seat theatre Downstairs and a versatile 160-seat Upstairs event space, we are a unique blend of theater, community, and creativity.
Theatre Off Jackson (TOJ) is looking for part-time Bartenders & Venue Managers (VM) to be part of our Front of House (FOH) team. Candidate hired will be expected to work both roles of Bartender & VM interchangeably, and in some cases, perform both roles at once. If you work an event as the sole Bartender & VM, you will receive all of the tips. If you work with multiple TOJ FOH staff on your shift, there will be a tip split according to role. Bartender & VM shifts will be rotated equitably between all staff, based on the team’s availability.

Bartender
Scope of Work
- Execute duties during performances, primarily during late afternoon (occasional weekend matinees) and evening hours; average shift is 4-5 hours including set-up and breakdown of the bar
- Preparing and serving beverages and snacks to audiences during pre-show, intermission, and occasionally during post-show events
- Adheres to all health and safety guidelines
- Securing the facilities by managing the alarm system upon arrival and departure
- Serving as an ambassador of TOJ to our community of artists, renters, and patrons
- Note: TOJ offers paid training shifts to ensure all staff are comfortable working in the space
Duties
- Mixing, preparing, and serving alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages and snacks to patrons
- Cash handling and taking payment via Square Point-of-Sale device
- Setting up and breaking down bar area
- Maintaining cleanliness in the bar, lobby and bathrooms. Note: TOJ has regular custodial service between performances
- Interfacing with patrons, other staff members, artists, and renters as needed
- Performing regular bar side work (e.g. trash/recycling removal, mopping, cleaning of surfaces, putting away and rotating inventory, restock bar and concessions) as assigned
- Maintaining regular communication with FOH Manager regarding logistics as needed, before and during events
- Attending regular monthly virtual and occasional on site staff meetings
- Read and respond to organizational emails
Venue Manager
Scope of Work
- Part-time work during performances, primarily during evening hours; average shift is 4-5 hours depending on event duration
- Manage FOH operations during performances for a streamlined artist and patron experience
- Interface with event producers, patrons, and TOJ staff (including other Front of House staff, Technical Liaisons, and Management)
- Maintaining good health and safety guidelines in lobby, restrooms, and performance spaces
- Securing the facilities by managing the alarm system upon arrival and departure
- Note: TOJ offers paid training shifts to ensure all staff are comfortable working in the space.
Duties
- Act as TOJ’s lead point of contact during public performances and events
- Open venue for performances, making sure all public areas are clean, orderly, and free of hazards
- Adhere to performance schedule timelines by confirming house/lobby opening times, unlocking/locking the front door preshow and at intermission, and helping with the flow of patrons at the bar as needed
- Communicate with stage management and box office during pre-show, performance, and post-show period as needed to ensure a seamless event
- Support patrons with accessibility needs which could include escorting them through our wheelchair entrance, selecting and placing chairs in the house, and helping them up and down stairs
- Barback for bartender as needed, including accessing items in fridge, pouring wines, and assisting with basic stocking and breakdown
- Close venue at end of night, including doing a final check to ensure interior and exterior spaces are clean, orderly, and free of hazards
- Complete and submit online VM form with attendance/show information and outlining any concerns to management
- Maintain communication with FOH Manager regarding logistics and emergencies as needed
- Attend regular monthly virtual and occasional on site staff meetings
- Read and respond to organizational emails
Bartender & Venue Manager Minimum Qualifications
- Valid MAST permit, or ability to attain one (TOJ can arrange training)
- At least one year of restaurant, bar, or food service experience
- At least one year of cash-handling experience
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Cultural competency with diverse artists and audiences
Bartender & Venue Manager Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a non-profit or arts organization
- Experience with operating a Point of Sale system
- A positive attitude and a growth mindset
- Desire to be a representative of a long-standing arts organization
