Salamangka Returns explores a pivotal moment in the life of Genea Salamangka, a barber’s daughter who is diverted from her musical career by a university professor. To find a new path and protect her heritage, Genea must prove she’s worthy of the family’s indigenous healing tradition. Her father holds the key as he guides Genea by introducing her to Filipino musicians.
Salamangka Returns was inspired by Tamaraw, a legendary 1970s Seattle Filipino band, and their manager, Barbara Bergano, who broke boundaries as a woman of color managing a popular band. Written by Robert Flor, whose plays are often set in Seattle’s Filipino community, the play is directed by Manny Golez, stage managed by Rachel Rene Araucto, and features an all-Filipino cast.
